At a glance

Green politics is a broad political tradition combining ecological sustainability with social justice, participatory democracy and nonviolence. Our catalogue uses this label for the wider political programme and Ecologism for its ecological philosophical foundations; the terms also overlap in scholarship.

Core principles

  • Ecological responsibility
  • Social justice
  • Participatory democracy
  • Nonviolence
  • Sustainability
  • Respect for diversity

Origins & development

Green movements brought environmental concerns into party politics alongside demands for social and democratic change. The Global Greens Charter provides a shared international statement of principles, rather than a uniform national platform.

Economic outlook

Green politics seeks to account for environmental costs and distribute the costs and benefits of transition fairly. Market instruments, regulation, public investment and cooperative ownership can coexist. The label alone establishes neither socialism nor capitalism, and specific parties need their own economic assessment.

Society & government

Grassroots participation, accountable institutions, equal rights and peaceful cooperation are common commitments. International coordination addresses problems that cross borders. Positions on religion and technologies vary; sustainability does not by itself imply opposition to technological innovation.

Variations & related traditions

Variants include green liberalism, green social democracy and ecosocialism. Ecologism supplies a closely related philosophical foundation, while environmentalism can describe environmental protection within other political traditions. A party may hold both labels, but overlapping labels should not be treated as independent evidence of its economic position.

Debates & criticisms

Debates concern ecological limits, growth, transition costs, technologies and compromises in government. Our nine-axis ratings summarize this broad tradition as an editorial profile, not measured facts or a rule for every green party. Economic, religious and biotechnology neutrality reflects variation within the tradition.
